Where are most of your graduates located, and what type of practices do they join after residency?

Most decide to practice in Ohio, and in particular, central Ohio, upon graduation.  Around 50% of our graduates join OhioHealth Physician Group, and the remaining join private or group practices with other systems OR go into fellowship.  Around 15% of graduates go on to fellowship. DHFM has a long history of training outstanding leaders.  Many of our graduates have become leaders in state organizations, healthcare systems, academia (medical schools or GME) and in private practice.

How do you think that your program compares with other programs?

All programs have their strengths, and we are great at training outpatient family medicine physicians! We are proud of our osteopathic recognition, and our residents have ample didactic and clinical opportunities to grow their osteopathic knowledge and skills. We have a strong focus on developing practice management skills so our residents feel strong in the business of medicine. We encourage and support community involvement and growth through service.

What kind of feedback are you hearing from your graduates?

“DHFM has successfully prepared me for practice from the first day.”  Through its focus on ambulatory medicine, practice management and Osteopathic care, graduates are on-average 3 years ahead of their peers when entering practice. Most commonly, our alumni say they are thankful for the day-to-day practice skills that were integrated into their experience.

Are some rotations done at other medical facilities?

Yes - our residents get a variety of rotational experiences across central Ohio including Grant Medical Center (OB), Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and other fantastic medical facilities.

Are any other residency programs in-house?

Yes, Doctors Hospital is the second largest osteopathic training institution in the country.  This allows residents to interact, consult, and develop professional relationships with physicians in other specialties. It is a very educational and collaborative training environment!

How much (and how often) is feedback provided to residents?

Residents are given feedback in several ways:

  • Real-time with direct observation of patient skills, direct observation of procedures and OMT

  • Electronic evaluation from community preceptors

  • Rotation evaluations from respective faculty

  • Direct observation/shadowing with faculty & senior residents

  • Feedback after didactic presentations

  • Quarterly reviews

  • Milestone reviews (December & May)

  • 360 anonymous feedback from peers and staff once per year

  • OSCE for clinical skills assessments once per year

  • OMT baseline evaluation once per year

How would you describe the patient demographics?

We see a mix of rural, suburban and urban populations with diverse backgrounds. Our patients come from a mix of payer pools (self pay, Medicaid, Medicare, commercial insurance). We recognize the impact of social determinants of health and utilize a multi-disciplinary team to care for our patients.

In what community service programs does your residency participate?

Community outreach includes:

  • Working on the Wellness on Wheels mobile unit as part of the Community Medicine and continuity experience

  • Central Ohio Family Medicine Volunteer Day at places like the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, Van Buren Shelter, etc.

  • Serving on medical teams for various sporting events in the Greater Columbus area

  • Adopt-a-family Winter gift donation

  • Making food and street bags to help support families impacted by poverty
